Genesis 9:1-17

Lessons Learned

1. The Bible consistently teaches that human beings are of superior worth to animals. NKJV Holman Study Bible note.

2. God has placed His blessing on human reproduction.

3. A covenant is a solemn agreement between two parties.

4. God’s covenants with Noah:

·        Genesis 6:18 God promised Noah that he would be safe in the ark.

  • Genesis 9:9-11 God promised never to destroy all flesh with a flood.

5. God’s grace is revealed when He promises not to destroy all flesh again by a flood.

6. God gave meaning to the rainbow that extends to us today.

7. God is not worried about a population explosion.

8. God spoke to Noah:

·        Genesis 6:13-21 Build an ark.

·        Genesis 7:1-4 Go into the ark, taking the animals with you.

·        Genesis 8:15 Go out of the ark with the animals.

·        Genesis 9:1-6 Be fruitful and multiply.

Animals will have fear and dread of you.

You may eat animal flesh without the blood.

Man is made in God’s image, therefore, life-for-life when man’s blood is shed.

Be fruitful and multiply.

·        Genesis 9:8-17 The covenant and the sign of the rainbow to confirm the covenant.

9. Children are a heritage from the Lord,
    offspring a reward from him.
Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
    are children born in one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
    whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
    when they contend with their opponents in court. Psalm 127:3-5

10. Application:

·        Children are a blessing from God.

·        God values human life, it bears the image of God, therefore, God expects us to protect life in all stages.

·        The rainbow represents God’s promise to not judge by the use of a flood, but Revelation gives us a picture of judgment that will come on those who do not believe in Jesus.

·Can’t afford a baby now (21 percent)

·Concerned about how having a baby would change her life (16 percent)

·Is too immature or young to have a child (11 percent)

·Has all the children she wanted or all children are grown (8 percent).”
