Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Genesis highlights that God judges wickedness and rewards faith.

2. Wickedness of man was great on the earth before the flood. Genesis 6:5

3. Sodom’s wickedness:

  • “Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord.” Genesis 13:13

  • “Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.” Ezekiel 16:49

  • “Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.” Jude 1:7

4. Abram believed God and it was counted as righteousness. Genesis 15:6

5. Lot did not approve of Sodom’s morals but he had grown accustomed to being around their sinful lifestyle.

6. “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever?” 2 Corinthians 6:14-15

7. No one in Sodom was sounding an alarm concerning their moral condition:

“...in the days of Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.”  Luke 17:28

8. Why is it important to obey God in all things?

9. Because of God’s grace, Lot was rescued from destruction. How has God extended grace to you?

10. Application:

  • Failing to heed the warning of God’s impending judgment is fatal.

  • God knows how to rescue the righteous from judgment.

    • Angels took them by the hand to lead them out of town.

    • “For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,” 1 Thessalonians 5:9

  • Living in a sinful evil environment dulls your spiritual perception. Therefore, it is important to regularly meet together with God’s people to study and worship together.

“Iron sharpens iron,
and one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17
