Genesis 28:10-22

Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. It is approximately 500-550 miles from Beersheba to Haran where Jacob’s relatives lived.

2. Beth-house, el-God, Bethel means ‘House of God’.

3. Jacob is the only patriarch to make a vow.

4. Bethel was about 60 miles north of Beersheba.

5. Isaac’s blessing to Jacob in the name of God Almighty (El Shaddai) as he sent Jacob to the relatives in Haran to find a wife has two parts:

·         Be fruitful and multiply.

·         Take possession of the land God promised to Abraham.

6. Luz means ‘almond tree’.

7. Jacob’s dream pictures God reaching out to Jacob.

8. God comes to meet you wherever you are.

9. God shows up to calm your fears.

10. God has a plan for your life.

11. Jacob’s dream confirmed the blessing given to him by Isaac when he was leaving.

12. This is Jacob’s first encounter with God.

13. God promised Jacob four things:

·         I will give you and your descendants the land.

·         All peoples on earth will be blessed through your offspring.

·         I will be with you

·         I will bring you back to this land.

14. Jacob and Esau were 15 years old when Abraham died.

·         Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born. Genesis 21:5

·         Isaac was 60 years old when Esau and Jacob were born. Genesis 25:26

·         Abraham was 175 years old when he died. Genesis 25:7

15. ‘The God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac’ had a personal meaning to Jacob.

16. Jacob and Esau were old enough to witness grandpa Abraham’s faith before he died.

17. Everyone must have a personal encounter with God.

18. Jesus is our stairway to heaven.

19. Genuine faith demands a response (Remember James 2:14-26 faith without works is dead). Jacob’s faith was initially expressed by:

·         His recognition of God.

·         The pillar set up as a memorial.

·         Making the stone special by anointing it with oil.

·         Vowing to give God one-tenth of all that God gives him.

20. Jacob returns to Beersheba (the place from which he left to go to Haran). Genesis 46:1

21. Jacob returns to Bethel and confesses that God kept the terms of His promise to Jacob. Genesis 35:1-7

22. Jacob’s faith would grow during his lifetime.

23. Everybody’s story of how God revealed Himself to them is unique.

24. Application:

  • Jacob needed assurance, I think he was feeling pretty low:

*He had taken his brother blessing by deceit.

*Now he was alone on a long trip.

We have God word to provide assurance that we belong to Him and that He cares for us.
