Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. “There are 2 reasons why Abram’s faith should be noted:

  • Because God’s word of Promise came to him in a crisis situation - after a battle.

  • Because it serves as a reminder to Abram’s attitude toward God.”

Dr. Don Laughlin

2. “Abram is a model for all of his descendants to imitate; whatever their circumstances, they must have faith in God.” (Dr. Gordon J. Wenham)

3. Fear - “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.” Oxford English Dictionary

4. “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7

5. Abram was 75 when he left Haran. Genesis 12:4

Abram had been in Canaan 10 years waiting for a son. Genesis 16:3

Abram was 86 when Ismael was born. Genesis 16:16

Abraham was 100 when Isaac was born. Genesis 21:5

6. Verses about righteousness:

  • “as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’”  Rom 1:17b cited from Habakkuk 2:4

  • “as it is written:

“None is righteous, no, not one.” Romans 3:10 cited from Psalm 14:1-3

  • “For what does the Scripture say? ‘Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.’” Romans 4:3 cited from Genesis 15:6

  • “And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness’—and he was called a friend of God.’” James 2:23

  • “and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.” Philippians 3:9-10

  • “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

6. Application:

  • It is our faith in Christ that is credited as righteousness.

    • “Without faith it is impossible to please God….” Hebrews 11:6a

  • Embrace God’s promises and give God time to unfold his plan for your life. Remember Abram and Sarai thought they were too old for God to fulfill His promise in their lives.

  • Mistakes do not disqualify you from God’s plan.
