Genesis 12:1-5, 13:11-18

Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Ur, Abram’s hometown, was located by the Euphrates River and was approximately 200 miles southeast of modern-day Baghdad.

2. Ur was a center for worshiping the moon-god Nanna.

3. Genesis 15:7 and Acts 7:2 tell us that God called Abram to leave Ur for a land God would give to him.

4. Abram’s name means ‘father is exalted.’

5. God’s plans for you exceed your best dream.

6. God will honor your proclaimed faith when you are obedient to Him.

7. God promised an old man with a barren wife that his descendants would be more than you can count.

8. God promised to give Abram more than what the people who were building the tower of Babel were trying to gain by their own effort, all Abram had to do was to go to a land God would show him.

9. Lot made his choice without asking for wisdom.

10. Lot made his choice without considering how it would impact his life.

11. Lot made his choice by considering how to increase his herds/flocks which was a measure of his wealth and prominence.

12. Lot grew accustomed to the ‘wicked and great sinners’ (v13) rather than separate himself from them, therefore he had to be rescued.

“...rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard);” 2 Peter 2:7-8 ESV

13. Application:

·        God’s blessing comes into your life after obedience on your part.

·        Abram built altars to remind him of how God had been faithful to him. What can you do to be reminded of God’s faithfulness to you?

  • Just like Abram, God has called you out of sin to live for Him.
