Mark 15:33-39, 16:1-8

Lessons Learned

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. He is risen! — He is risen indeed!

2. The Resurrection is the greatest event in history.

3. Parallel passages of the resurrection are:

Matthew 28:1-7, Mark 16:1-8’ Luke 24:1-12, John 20:1-9

4. Mark focuses on six events of the crucifixion of Jesus.

  • Darkness. 15:33

  • Jesus’ cry of anguish. 15:34-36

  • The final cry and His death. 15:37

  • The Temple curtain torn from top to bottom. 15:38

  • The confession of the Roman centurion. 15:39

  • The women witness the death of Jesus. 15:40-41

5. Darkness is a symbol of judgment.

6. Although Jesus had spoken of his resurrection, no one was expecting to find an empty tomb.

7. The first to see Jesus were those who went looking for Him.

8. The chief priests and Pharisees remembered that Jesus said He would rise after three days, but His followers were not expecting Him to rise.

9. The women Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome were the first followers of Jesus to know about the resurrection. Mark 16:1

10. The women evidently were unaware of the Roman guard that had been placed at the tomb on Saturday to keep people away. Matthew 27:62-66

11. The stone would easily roll down the slope to close the entrance to the tomb, rolling it back up the slope would be very difficult—it was very large. 16:4

12. Luke 24:7 says, “...be crucified and on the third day rise.”  Jesus was crucified on Friday, in the grave on Saturday, and rose on the third day Sunday.

13. The women came to the tomb to express their love for Jesus by giving his body the proper treatment for burial.

14. Three reasons it was necessary for Jesus’ bodily resurrection. John MacArthur

  • To demonstrate Christ’s complete victory over sin.

  • To demonstrate the purpose of God in humanity is to give glory to God.

  • The physical resurrection of Jesus offers visible proof that God was satisfied with the sacrifice of Jesus.

15. Without the resurrection, we have no gospel (good news).

16. Peter is specifically mentioned to be told of the resurrection because he needed to know he was not rejected, because he had denied being a follower of Jesus. Mark 16:7

17. The disciples were to meet Jesus in Galilee (Mark 14:28, 16:7). This is probably the place where Jesus appeared to more than 500 brothers at one time. (1 Corinthians 15:6)

18. By the resurrection of Jesus, God transformed the tragedy into a great victory.

“Death is swallowed up in victory.”

“O Death, where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?”  1 Corinthians 15:54b-55

19. The women were shocked by:

  • The great earthquake. Matthew 28:2

  • The angel in a white robe. Mark 16:5

  • The message of the angel, “He is not here, He is risen.”  Mark 16:6

  • Empty grave clothes. Mark 16:6

20. Christmas initiated the plan of redemption; Easter sealed the deal.

21. Jesus’ obedience and righteousness result in life (resurrection) for all His spiritual descendants. Romans 5:18-19

22. Resurrection Day appearances of Jesus:

  • Mary Magdalene John 20:11-18

  • The women while on the way to tell the disciples. Matthew 28:9

  • Two men on the Emmaus Road. Luke 24:13-32

  • Simon (Peter). Luke 24:34

  • The disciples without Thomas. John 20:19-24

23. “It is unlikely that Mark could have intended terminating his work with the banal anti-climax of the statement of verse 8. The likelihood, therefore, is either that Mark was prevented through death from consummating his story, or else that he finished it, but that the concluding columns of his scroll (which would form the scroll’s outer covering) were accidentally destroyed before ever it had been copied. It would not be unreasonable to suppose that such a final column contained the story of an appearance of the risen Jesus to the frightened women mentioned in verse 8, which calmed their fears, and enabled them to go with confidence to the disciples and proclaim to them the fact of Jesus’ resurrection.” FF Bruce Commentary p. 1180

24. Application:

  • At the foot of the cross, you begin to see how much Jesus loves sinners by what He endured to purchase their pardon.

  • Evidence of a risen Christ.

    • Women saw Him die, where He was buried, and the empty grave.

    • Mark lists eyewitnesses of the risen Savior. Mark 16:9, 12, 14

    • The eleven apostles were all martyred for telling the story of a risen savior.

    • Everyone must respond to the empty tomb.
